What This Bill Does

Expands the list of optional holidays for state employees to include religious and cultural observances such as Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Lunar New Year, Dashera, Vaisakhi, Vesak, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and one day each of Diwali and Passover. State employees can now choose to take these days off, providing greater recognition and flexibility for diverse religious and cultural celebrations. The changes will take effect on September 1, 2025, allowing state agencies time to update their holiday policies.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
SECTION 1.  Section 662.003(c), Government Code, is amended
(c)  An "optional holiday" includes only:
(1)  the days on which Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, [or]
Good Friday, All Saints' Day, Lunar New Year, Dashera, Vaisakhi,
Vesak, Eid al-Fitr, or Eid al-Adha fall; and
(2)  one day of the Diwali festival and one day of
Passover selected by the state employee observing the optional
SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect September 1, 2025.
