What This Bill Does
Allows licensed paramedics to legally detain individuals with mental illness who pose a substantial risk of serious harm to themselves or others, if their medical director has specifically authorized them to do so. Paramedics can make this determination based on observed behavior or credible reports, and must immediately transport the person to an appropriate mental health facility while informing them of the reason for detention. The bill provides a standardized notification form for paramedics to document the emergency detention, ensuring a consistent process for temporarily admitting individuals who may need urgent mental health intervention.
