What This Bill Does

Modifies population calculation methods for rural sheriff's, constable's, and prosecutor's salary assistance grant programs, allowing counties to use the most recent annual population estimate from the state demographer instead of solely relying on federal decennial census data. For constables, it specifically defines a "qualified constable" as one elected to an office created by January 1, 2023, who primarily conducts motor vehicle stops. For prosecutor's offices, it defines a "qualified prosecutor's office" as district attorney, criminal district attorney, or county attorney offices in jurisdictions with 300,000 or fewer residents, making them eligible for grant assistance.
