What This Bill Does

This Texas bill requires social media platforms with over 1.5 million active users in the state to attach provenance data to photos, videos, and audio files created on or posted to their platforms. For files where provenance can be determined, platforms must include metadata showing the file's origin date, place, generation method, and transmission history, and provide users an easy way to access this information. If a platform cannot discern a file's provenance, it must attach a clear notice stating that provenance data is unavailable.

platform cannot discern the provenance data of the file.
