What This Bill Does
This Texas bill mandates a gradual increase in school counselor employment across school districts based on student enrollment. Starting in the 2027-2028 school year, districts with 450+ students must employ at least one school counselor per 450 students, with the requirement progressively lowering to 300 students by the 2033-2034 school year. For smaller districts with fewer than 500 students, the bill provides flexible options to meet counseling requirements, including hiring part-time counselors, using certified teachers as counselors, or creating shared counseling service agreements with other districts. Additionally, the bill provides state aid to help districts cover the costs of employing certified school counselors.
